A year in the making…
Somerset Rhythms is a collection of seven hand-printed lampshades that are produced in and inspired by the Somerset landscape. The collection is a collaboration with the totally brilliant textile printer Jessie de Salis, and was born out of a mutual belief in local production, hand-making skills and using natural materials wherever possible.
The lampshades bear simple linear shapes that twist and weave and undulate. These are picked out in a palette of burgundy and terracotta, referencing the local soil and clay, and a soft pink, blue and green that nod to the native fauna. We have balanced the organic forms and soft, earthy colours with the angular shape and exaggerated slant of the lampshades to offer a more contemporary aesthetic.
Jessie hand screen prints our designs at her Yarlington studio, using eco-friendly, water-based inks. She prints on the aptly named Somerset paper, which is traditionally produced at St Cuthbert’s Mill, near Wells, on one of the few remaining cylinder moulds in the world. The archival paper is made of cotton linters, which are a by-product of the cotton industry. Carousel then cuts, hand stitches and binds the lampshades in Frome. The three locations sit within 18 miles of each other, keeping things hyper local.
The Experimental Collection
This lampshade bears our Worm, Turning motif in chocolate brown, adding a bit of verve to the simple linen pleats. The pattern has been screen printed by hand using eco-friendly, water-based inks onto a beautifully textured ecru linen. The fabric has been hand pleated and stitched onto our signature carousel frame, then finished with a hand-dyed, cotton braid.
